Proposal Guide for Brain Imaging Center Resources

  • MR Scanner Time
  • MR Scanner Operator Time
  • MR Safety Training
  • Consultation Services for Design, Acquisition, and Analysis
  • Established Resources for Storage and Analysis of MR Data

For the purposes of this proposal, research projects are divided into two categories:

  • Type I. Request for resources that will be paid for by non-BIC sources such as federal grants.
  • Type II. Request for resources that will be funded in part or full by a BIC grant. Researchers who lack internal (including start-up funds) or external support may request a limited amount of MRI scan time to conduct the pilot (proof of concept/feasibility) work necessary to compete for grant funding. Such awards are not intended to support complete studies and recipients will be required to make a compelling case in their proposals for why this data is necessary and identify the specific grant mechanisms for which they will compete. Applications from researchers who have not previously received such pilot support will be given priority. All applications will be critiqued with an eye toward increasing the competitiveness of subsequent grant applications, and applicants may be asked to revise accordingly.

Projects of both types must be approved by the BIC and this proposal guide serves as the application. For Type I research, the proposal allows the BIC to assess the appropriateness and safety of the project. For Type II, it serves this function in addition to serving as a request for a BIC grant to pay for BIC-provided resources.

Format and Submission

Proposals should be single-spaced, with a space between paragraphs, in 12 point font. The proposal consists of the six parts discussed below. Maximum page limits are provided for each part, and shorter proposals are to be preferred so long as the logic of the proposal is made clear.

Part 1: Overview (1 Page Maximum)

  • Title
  • Personnel: Principal Investigators and other personnel including MR Scanner Operators, Lab Research Coordinators, Lab Technicians, Undergraduate and Graduate Students, Post-Docs, etc.
  • Specific Aims
  • Prior attempts to obtain funding for the project and the status of any current proposals.
  • Part 2. Research Proposal (3 Pages Maximum)

  • Background & Significance
  • Overview of proposed Research
  • Part 3: Protocols and Safety Assurance (2 Pages Maximum)

  • Qualifications and roles of personnel
  • Participants: Anticipated number and characteristics; how and whether they will be compensated, and from what source
  • Acquisition / Design / Procedure (use a diagram if it is helpful)
  • Data Analysis
  • IRB or ACUC status: University approval for the research must be obtained from the IRB for human research or the ACUC for animal research, before use of the brain imaging center can begin. The present form can be reviewed by the brain imaging center before university approval is obtained. An electronic copy of the university approval letter should be forwarded to the brain imaging center when it is obtained.
    • NOTE: A copy of the Health Sciences IRB Approval must be attached or forwarded along with the proposal information if available at the time of submission. This IRB Approval must be received before implementation of the Research Project.
  • Part 4: Funding

  • Detailed request for resources including funding sources. Describe all resources requested and indicate whether these resources are to be paid by a BIC grant or other funds. Requested resources can include scanner time, the time of an MRI technologist and use of the mock scanner.
  • Time line for use of BIC resources.
  • Describe how this grant will seed future external funding for MRI-related research and when it is expected that an external grant proposal will be submitted.
    • NOTE: An attempt at obtaining external funding is expected as part of the agreement for a Type II BIC grant (requesting BIC resources) to be awarded
  • Part 5: Bibliographic References Cited in the Proposal

Part 6: Biosketches for all investigators (NIH or NSF format preferred)
